HealthSouth of Erie Celebrates National Rehabilitation Week (NRW)
HealthSouth of Erie celebrated NRW planning several events to recognize both the patient populations that we treat as well as the successes we have made in achieving our goal of being the provider of choice for acute rehabilitation.

Leading into the NRW celebration, we held an annual event with our Community Stroke Support Group recognizing the success and ongoing progress that has been achieved by some of our former patients who actively participate in the group. To support and give back to our community, we also participated in the American Heart Association’s regional Heart Walk, an annual event that falls adjacent to NRW. This year, our hospital along with our team of walkers raised more than $3,700 in support of this important initiative.

In one of the more exciting events held during NRW, our patients competed against our staff in a wheelchair basketball game. Additional events that were held during this week of celebration included a Traumatic Brain Injury patient reunion, a facility open house event, and an entertainment night for our in-house patients.

We also incorporated employee recognition into NRW and honored the years of service of our dedicated staff of which nearly half have been employed with us for 10 years or more. We are proud of our dedicated staff who facilitate our ability to provide the highest quality rehabilitative care for our patients.

HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie maintains Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Accreditation
HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie in June of 2009 received its re-accreditation from the Joint Commission for Disease-Specific Care Certifications for its Stroke, Parkinson Disease and Brain Injury Rehabilitation Programs. HealthSouth Erie continues to be among the select few Hospitals in the country to hold the designation for three rehabilitation programs.

To maintain this distinction, the Stroke/Neurology and Brain Injury Teams along with key hospital staff participate in an extensive on-site survey process that evaluates program-specific practices and their ability to evaluate and improve care within the organization every two years.

HealthSouth Erie’s specialized care includes post-operative deep brain stimulation (DBS) rehabilitation, post-operative intrathecal baclofen (spasticity) rehabilitation, and dysphagia rehabilitation program - which includes VitalStim. Providing additional distinction, the hospital offers HealthSouth’s Auto Ambulator, REO (Robot-Assisted) Arm Recovery Therapy, SmartStep (electrical stimulation) foot and ankle therapy, Bioness (electrical stimulation) hand and wrist recovery therapy, Saeboflex and gait and balance programs.

Close working relationships with program medical directors, James DeMatteis, MD, Jonathan Costa, MD, and local and regional neurosurgeons who specialize in DBS surgery provide confidence regarding medical expertise and leadership at HealthSouth Erie.

At HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie, we  work tirelessly to remain a center of excellence for specialized rehabilitative care. This comprehensive and independent evaluation by the Joint Commission provides confidence that our safety and quality of care is outstanding.
